Somerset Reacquainted exhibition install in progress in Somerset Rural Life Museum

We are excited to announce Somerset Reacquainted Touring, a series of exhibitions and participatory events working in collaboration with artists and venues across Somerset, focusing on exploring the diverse artistic practices of artists in the county, beyond the Covid-19 restrictions. Exhibitions include writing, images and objects from the original Somerset Reacqauainted, plus new work from individual artists and collaborations.

‘Materiality’
26 June – 31 July, ACEarts, Somerton

Everyday objects seem no longer to be taken for granted. How did they become inspirations for artists and acquire a new meaning of life? It’s been a time to also look at our material world in a different light.  A new collaborative book project with more than 50 artists during the latest lockdown, alongside with new works from artists.

‘Re-imagining Nature’
4 Aug – 11 September, Yeovil Art Space, Yeovil

When a crisis like Covid-19 strikes upon us, like nothing before, once again we turn our minds to the forces of nature around us. Artists find fascination in our natural world, landscape and history; reimagining the future, bringing new ideas and looking at our world in different ways. Video, sound and mixed-media work responding to the climate emergency, conservation and bio-diversity.

‘Community’
18 Sept – 24 Oct, 2021, Brewhouse Theatre and Art Centre, Taunton

When isolation and solitude are forced upon us, many seek ways to bring different voices together. The exhibition brings together the manifesto from our diverse artists’ community, encapsulating the purpose for making art, their value and their contribution to the county. Alongside the Somerset Open Studios event.

‘Solace’
20 October 2021 – 20 January 2022, Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton

Well-being became more important than ever during the lockdown for artists. Time to focus on self-care and discover the meaning of their work, the importance of subjectivities and the solace for many during this difficult time. New works from Somerset artists reflect, elicit and share notions of solace, calmness and wellbeing.

‘Slow Time’

15th Jan – 27th Feb 2022, Black Swan Arts, Frome

‘Slow Time’ is the result of a project recording the passage of time initiated during the first lockdown. Led by Somerset Solagraphic Society, set up by artists Janette Kerr and John Gammans, and supported by Somerset Art Works, this extraordinary exhibition features long-exposure photographs of the Somerset landscape created using nothing more than recycled drinks cans made into pinhole cameras.

‘Somerset Reacquainted’ was a project with 63 artists running throughout 2020, which articulated a renewed engagement with nature, locality and community during lockdown. Using ideas of reacquaintance as a starting point, the project encouraged artists to re-discover excitement and purpose in their artistic practices. Initiated by Sara Dudman and working in collaboration with SAW’s Artist Development Programme
