County of Contrasts is our curatorial programme in 2019 to feature new commissions and site-specific work by artists in the UK and in Somerset. We are working with artists, guest curators and organisations to develop and produce new work in artist-led approach; encouraging artists to research into the subject of their interests, respond to the hidden and unknown aspect of Somerset and produce work with the medium of their choice. The programme promotes a wide range of contemporary art practices, including film, new media, sound, performance and installation. Some of the work will be shown during Somerset Art Weeks Festival 2019 and beyond.

A new participatory sound art work that fosters connections between Somerset’s people and its plants, by bringing knowledge of local natural history to bear on our everyday human problems and dilemmas.
Drawing upon the stories of pilots living in Somerset, MEMORY takes the audience on a visual and aural journey from the axons and neurons found inside brains to the distinctive topography of Somerset.
During Summer 2019 Somerset Rural Life Museum will inspire audiences to engage with rural ceramics through a programme of events focusing on the heritage craft of slipware.
Tom will research into the archive at Somerset Heritage Centre and work with young people in Taunton to create work responding to the theme of ‘breaking down barriers’ for the Tyca Festival 2-3 November at the The Museum of Somerset.
