BIO: Gary Mills BA Hons Design Fashion, PGCE
After an extensive career that formerly started in the fashion & textile design industry, progressed into the world of academia, becoming The Head of Fashion, Textiles and Surface Design for the University Centre of Somerset.
In 2017 Gary made the bold decision to once again “go solo” and came out of the "main stream education system", to pursue his passion in exploring his own practice and style, but continues teaching privately the skills required in creative textiles, in all its many forms.
Gary says, “I now have the clarity and time to pursue and expand my own practice development from designer to artist; I personally find the two areas of the creative spectrum merge and separate as I travel along this journey. For some time now, I am drawn to the national park of Exmoor, exploring imagery and inspiration taken from this environment which often appears in my work”
Examples of processes explored in Gary’s work are thus far in 2D outcomes which include applique, paint, print, machine embroidery and hand stitch. He also returns to his formal training in fashion design and pattern cutting with 3D forms in garments for the body but also producing more playful examples in morphed human / animal figures in his extensive portfolio of work.

Gary goes on to say, “I still enjoy teaching immensely, seeing how other people take my ideas and make them their own, and therefore I continue the imparting of knowledge and skills, through my private adult workshops and classes across the south west region of the UK”.
