Charlotte Humpston
At my core I am a painter. My recent project ‘The Peace of Wild Things’ is taken from the title of Wendell Berry’s poem (the American poet & environmental activist) In the 2020-21 lockdown I returned to painting to study nature. Walking on Westhay Moor (the Somerset Levels) and photographing the dark, watery landscape, I focused on the multi-layered qualities of the reeds and trees and their reflections in the black peaty waters.
I am interested in the qualities of natural forms and vibrancy of detail that the human eye enjoys. The tertiary colours of nature calm the mind and with the absence of human forms or buildings allow the eye to sink into a landscape purely of wild nature.
Studying for a Masters in Fine Art at Bath Spa 2014-16, I developed my ideas through drawing, film, photography, textiles & sculpture, producing mix-media installations. Originally trained as a theatre designer I enjoy the process of researching in multi-medias giving myself the freedom to make artwork in both 2D & 3D. My multi-layered installations give my viewers the opportunity to move around and discover the work in site-specific locations.
