Gather-ing celebration and viewing

Saturday 3 October, 11- 3pm: The installations will be presented by the artists during a ‘live’ celebration in the barn.
Sunday 4 October, 11- 3pm: The installation will be open for viewing and artist Stewart Easton will be available to talk about his work and the project.

‘WING WALK’ by Jackie Morris
Sunday 4 October, 2pm

Venture into the woods of Dulverton to celebrate the publication of Wild Swans by international author and illustrator Jackie Morris. She will be joined by artists Tamsin Abbott and Eleanor Bartlemen whose work also explores the delusion of flight. This will be an intimate opportunity for you to discuss their artistic inspiration, hear Jackie read before returning for a suitably themed high tea and book signing opportunity. Guided tour of the exhibitions and garden

Visitors are invited on a guided tour of the current exhibition, Softer Targets by Jenny Holzer. The tour will also include Oudolf Field, the perennial garden designed by Piet Oudolf, and the Radić Pavilion designed by Smiljan Radić.

Artist Talk: Alice Maddicott
Thursday 8 October 1.30 – 3pm

Alice Maddicott was selected by SAW to create new work for the Festival this year. She will be giving an artist talk to share her journey of making and creating The Car Boot Museum, and the experience of creating the evolving poetic travelogue which inspired the final video installation.

Magic of Trees Artist Talk

Artists Tim Craven and Gordon Field talk about their contribution to the Magic of Trees. The opening hours of the show will be extended that evening. Please also see venue 110. FREE event, no booking required.

NGS Autumn Special Openings
Friday – Sunday 9 – 11 October

5 of the National Garden Scheme gardens will open especially for the Festival. You will be able to view art work displays with artists working on site, as part of a site-specific art project Sensing the Landscape, curated by Karina Joseph from Field (fieldgallery.co.uk) You will be able to meet the artists, attend a curator talk and take part in various activities. Artist Talk Simon Lee Dicker and tour of Twineworks
Saturday 10 October 6 – 8pm
OSR Project Space: Old School Room, Church Street, West Coker, Somerset BA22 9BD

Simon Lee Dicker was selected by SAW to create new work for the Festival this year. This event celebrates the creation of a site specific installation in the 100 yard long Ropewalk at Dawes’ Twineworks. Night walk in Fairy Cave Quarry with Ralph Hoyte

As part of Ralph’s ‘Syncline’ (sonic intervention) in Fairy Cave Quarry, Ralph is offering a guided sonic night walk ‘Anticline’. To experience his work in the dark, under a new moon, bring a good torch and stout foot wear. Artist Talk by Tessa Famer
Wed 14 October 5.30-6.30pm

Talk by artist Tessa Farmer as part of the Step in Stone project. Tessa, an International artist of “miniscule sculptures constructed from bits of organic material, such as roots, leaves, and dead insects.. tiny spectacles … evolve as something alien and futuristic… apocalyptic narratives of a microscopic underworld.” MA.  Her work has been exhibited widely: Bath Abbey, Holburne Museum, The Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art in Sunderland, Jerwood Space in London and Firstsite in Colchester.  She was also artist-in-residence at the Natural History Museum in London. Artist Talk by Trevor Pitt
Thursday 15 October 1.30pm

Trevor Pitt is an artist and curator based in Birmingham. Since 2005 he has made a ‘Flock of Benches’ in collaboration with knitting groups from across the UK. Using locally sourced fleeces and uniquely spun yarns, each group personalised their benches by applying a variety of knitting and felting techniques. Impetus Word Jam

The event showcases a mutli-media interactive installation work by resident artist Gavin Morris and Farmer Glitch. Artist Talk: Gideon Mendel

Widely regarded as one of the world’s leading documentary photographers, Mendel’s practice supports activist purposes. In recent years he has covered global floods caused by climate change. Expend your artistic skills or learn something new

This year, many venues offer activities, such as demonstrations and workshops for all ages. Please see those with the ‘Activities’ sign workshops_hand Please note some of the workshops are for different ages, ranging from beginners to professionals.

All day workshops include simple home cooked lunch, to include refreshments and materials.

  • Saturday 3 October 10:30 – 3pm. Workshop to make beautiful wearable glass and silver jewellery. Fee £40
  • Sunday 11 October 10:30 – 1pm Family willow workshop to make butterflies and bird feeders using locally sourced willow. Fee £30
  • Saturday 17 October 10:30 – 4pm Glass Casting workshop. Learn how to make sculptural items using glass. Fee £75.
  • Sunday 18 October 10:30 – 4:30pm Make a traditional round basket £75.

shiftWorks Workshops

Textile workshops: 11 – 1pm or 2 – 4pm on each Saturday (See below).

– Saturday 3 October: shiftWrap with Desiree Goodall. Knit together to make a wrap for a shift dress. Basic knitting experience required.

– Saturday 10 October: Embroider a dress in a day with Anna Gravelle with collaborative hand embroidery/sequins/beads. Hand embroider with threads, sequins and beads a collaborative dress. Beginners welcome.

– Saturday 17 October: Create a felted shift dress with Angie Parker. Felt flat panels and decorative balls to embellish a collaborative dress. Beginners welcome.

One Day Introduction to Weaving workshops

Family Events

During Somerset Art Weeks Festival 2015 most of the venues will be very happy to welcome families. Venues with the Family Friendly Logo family_friendly mean that you can be sure that they are expecting visits from families and groups. It also means they are doing their best to provide clear information and facilities for your family. However, some of the venues are temporary and they will have limited facilities, so if you have specific needs, please check with the venue before your visit.

Guided Walk
Sunday 4 October, 2pm
Priorswood Community Centre

Join SAW and Somerset Wildlife Trust for a Somerset Art Weeks guided walk in Taunton. Over the course of an hour, you will explore some of the town’s green spaces and its amazing wildlife. Discover the guerilla art trail and nature street art commissioned by SAW through their partnership with the Somerset Wildlife Trust. Meet at the Priorswood Community Centre at 2 o’clock. StoryLight Yurt
