Arts Administration Internship

This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the creative and cultural sector working within a Somerset visual arts agency with a countywide remit.


Somerset Art Works is an artist-led organisation and Somerset’s only countywide agency dedicated to developing the visual arts. The core of SAW’s philosophy is to provide opportunities for artists and makers to make new work, network with other artists and engage with a variety of organisations, landscapes and communities.


Job Description

Hours: 7 hours per week (working in Langport, Somerset with travel to other locations as required, must have own transport ).

Remuneration: National Living Wage £9.00 per hour (depending upon age)

Reporting to: Paul Newman

Start date: 1 June 2019

End date: 30 October 2019


Job Purpose 

Somerset Art Works are looking to recruit an intern to assist their core team in all aspects of Arts Administration. There will be a range of tasks designed to provide you with valuable work experience. You will work closely with the existing staff on a range of projects including:

General administrative support for the Festival Co-ordinator, before and after the event

+ Assist our projects and artist commissions delivery, including aspects of exhibition installation, workshop delivery, event and project organisation

+ Assist our digital communications, including social media campaigns and other relevant marketing activities


Skills/Personal Qualities required:


+ Education: degree level or equivalent experience

+ Literacy skills equivalent to GCSE C grade

+ Good communication skills with people from all walks of life

+ Well organised. Confidence to work on own initiative, unsupervised, under pressure and to strict deadlines

+ Ability to be flexible, self motivated and respond quickly to instructions

+ Ability to problem solve

+ Ability to produce simple promotional materials and organise distribution

+ A working knowledge of MS Office and online resources

+ Driving Licence and own transport


You should have experience in at least one of the following:

+ Research skills

+ Audience development/marketing skills

+ Writing for different audiences/ marketing skills



+ At least three years experience of/contact with the arts through study or participation

+ Knowledge of artistic community and audiences in Somerset


The post holder may be required to have an enhanced DBS to undertake this role which  SAW will organise and pay for.
