The wonderful Arts and Crafts gardens surrounding Lytes Cary Manor form an important element of the overall design of the house and in response to this SAW commissioned four highly acclaimed artists to enhance these beautiful gardens through the inspiration of the Niewe Herball. The artists were: Gary Breeze, Alison Crowther, Malcolm Martin collaborating with Gaynor Dowling and Anne-Marie O’Sullivan.

This project showcased contemporary craft: makers, skills, materials and thinking in the context of the site and subject ‘Herbarium’, aiming to meet the aspiration of Somerset Art Works to ‘inspire and challenge’ audiences and ‘raise’ the quality of craft seen in Somerset.

SAW delivered a programme of education workshops at Lytes Cary, run by Studio Boo artists, for InspirED secondary schools Robert Blake Science College from Bridgwater (pictured) and Ansford Academy from Castle Cary.
